Fabric Manipulation via the Ruth Singer approach. You've heard me mention The Art of Manipulating Fabric before, but here is a more simple and practical approach to creating some textile art.

I’ve mentioned before that the book The Art of Manipulating Fabric by Colette Wolff, is pretty much gold for fabric manipulation. However, if you’ve picked this up before you may have felt just a tad intimidated by the amount of knowledge in it. Well, the book Fabric Manipulation by Ruth Singer offers a much more practical and straight-forward approach by utilising like a project-based approach. You basically find a technique you want to try and just follow the steps. However, given the natural creativity in fabric manipulation, you will find yourself deviating very quickly from the instructions to put your own artistic talent into the fabric sample you want to create.

Here are some photos of the last time I played around with some fabric manipulation techniques from Ruth Singer’s book. Like I said, as soon as I began sewing, I found myself coming up with some fresh ideas and deviating from the instructions. I guess, the best part about Fabric Manipulation by Ruth Singer over The Art of Manipulating Fabric by Colette Wolff is that the instructions are so simple to understand that you can quickly see where you can add your own creativity to the process. Enjoy.

If you enjoy sewing, or being creative with your fashion and almost turning it into textile art, then you should definitely give fabric manipulation a go.

The world: ignites in me, a sense of curiosity. My mind does not settle until it can comprehend, until it understands. For the physical world, creation has always been my enduring method of choice. For the spiritual world, all-encompassing practices like yoga and meditation, a belief in a higher energy, and writing have always been the soothing and balancing tools I have returned to, to re-ground myself. This is my journey of self-expression. Through written words and different forms of art. To my soul, my inner essence.

There are many things you can do with gathers. You can sew gathers or begin by first drafting them on pattern paper. You can draw gathers to incorporate them into your fashion designs or you can drape them straight on the dress form. But today, we’ve used gathers to create textile art.
