August Makes (Art Edition)

For the month of August, I decided that I would make time to paint more frequently. Almost every day, but I figured painting every couple of days would still be okay. Now you may have already heard me mention this previously, as my art intention for August in this post.

As I said there, it wasn’t as though I felt I wasn’t making time to paint, I believe I am and I do and I am actually quite content with that. Though what I did want to do was alleviate this pressure of creating a complete piece (that I was happy with) in one session. If you’ve ever painted before, or dabbled in something creative, ‘planning’ a creative session doesn’t always turn out how you expect it to or ‘plan’ it to. Yes, regardless of how much you’ve convinced yourself that you’re in control, it will surprise you and remind you who is in control. And it’s not you. You may think it’s you when you have a good session. But it’s not you. I’m sorry.

So just sit back and enjoy the journey. Though there are things that you can help to prepare and implement during the process that will turn things in your favor. So please don’t be disheartened!

Back to my August Makes! I have four abstract paintings to share with you today. I say today because we are still in August and as I am continuing (obviously) my art intention for August, so you will see several more blog posts, published as subsequent parts to the August Makes series.

The first abstract art painting I want to share as part of my August Makes is the one you see below. I spoke a lot about this painting and its color palette in this post, so I won’t explain it again here. However, I did want to include that art piece in this blog post because the color palette of the 2nd and 3rd August Makes are based on that color palette. So I thought it would make sense at least to include a photo of it.

As I have already mentioned, the color palette of the 2nd and 3rd August Makes was inspired by the color palette of the first. When I shared the first painting on Instagram, someone commented that they really like the color palette, so I thought, hey I’ll just keep playing with this color palette and see where it goes.

Even though my intent was to continue with the same color palette, I did decide whilst mixing my paint colors that I would leave out the green/gold color I mixed for the last one. So on my palette, I had Paynes Grey (Brand: Jo Sonja’s Acrylic Paint), Rose Pink (Brand: Jo Sonja’s Acrylic Paint) and Titanium White. I mixed lighter shades of the blue and pink and a lighter version of the blue and pink combined. This gave me several paint colors to work with that worked cohesively together.

Although the two paintings are similar, they are quite different at the same time too. The beauty of abstract!

Abstract Art Painting #3

The fourth and final August Make I want to share in this blog post, is below. Although it was similar in color to the rest of the paintings (in terms of the use of blue and pink/coral), they are different colors and actually a mixture of brands. Here, I’ve used Lemon Yellow (Brand: Mont Marte), Pythalo Blue (Brand: Golden Fluid Acrylics), and a shade of pink/red. Unfortunately, I can’t remember which shade, though I feel like it was one of the colors from the Jo Sonja’s Acrylic Paints range.

There are some days where I think I really like the fourth painting and then there are some days where I just look at it and think it’s just not working for me. We’ll see what becomes of it. I may want to revisit it. In some way.

Links to the paint colors I mentioned in this blog post, for if you feel inspired to adopt the same colors. For the Jo Sonja’s paint colors I use the 75ml paint tubes not the bottles. I’ve only tried the bottle for Titanium White and regretted it. I know it sounds paranoid but the consistency and the quality did not feel the same to me. So just saying.
