One way to enrich your life with art is to browse through art magazines. Sounds simple, right? But are you actually doing it? And more importantly, are you capitalising on the benefits it presents? It is often the simple things we hear that we quickly speed past and dismiss, rather than slowing down to absorb. Something doesn’t need to be complicated or difficult to be of value.

The action to many may be the same. Browse. And simple for that matter. But your reason and intent behind it, is no doubt much deeper than that.

To Be More Creative

Perhaps you want to be more creative in your life. And the anchor to your ‘more’ may be significantly different to that of the next person. Yours may be at a starting block of no creativity, where really you feel more like you are standing in the middle of an overgrown wheat field than anything else, with no idea what to do next.

Or perhaps you are someone who is already dabbling in some creative pursuits and wondering how can I do more of this? How can I keep building upon what I have already learnt?

To Bring Enjoyment Into Your Life

Maybe you’re sitting on an entirely different part of the fence. You want to use it to bring enjoyment back into your life. To stop doing the same things over and over again in your life – things that have become mundane and no longer ignite your inner fire. You want to use it to bring variety back into your life. To give yourself the freedom to explore and be exposed to different things. To allow yourself to grow.

To Achieve Inner Balance And Harmony

Or perhaps yours comes from more of a spiritual place. You want to browse art magazines to reach a greater sense of inner balance and harmony. You want to take actions that align with your goals and the ideal life you want to lead. Rather than play tug of war between the actual and the planned/ideal – you want to put an end to it because it’s getting tiresome.

Remember you need to do the things that enable you to create more of what you want in your life. Think of this action as the means to navigate from the present to the ideal. Think of it as that action that’s ‘how to get from where you are to where you want to be’. Make Jack proud.

Browse through art magazines and enrich your life with art in your own way, for your own reasons.

Up until this point, my recommendation to you has been to ‘browse art magazines’. The use of the term ‘browse’ has been intentional. I will come back to this in a moment, but for now, I want to focus on the second element of this phrase, that is, art magazines.

Art magazines. If you pull back for a moment and observe this phrase again, I hope you can recognise that it is a rather particular implementation or instance of a more holistic concept, best represented by the placeholder of {domain} {medium}. Your domain may not be art. The area of your life that you want to be more creative may be best served under another umbrella. It may be art you craft with your hands. It may be painted art. It may be digital art. It may be photography. It may be something else. Whatever it may be, I hope that you can replace the term ‘art’ with what appeals to you. Something that resonates with you. What you believe is going to make you more creative. What represents how you want to bring enjoyment back into your life. What you believe will allow you to be more balanced and harmonious in your life.

As for the magazine – see it for what it represents. It is just a medium. With the intent and sole purpose to advocate the domain, it is focused on. So it presents a great resource of that domain. But if your preference is another medium, a journal, a newspaper, a website, then use that instead. For me, I have always been drawn to using my hands, so a magazine that I can hold in my hands is my preference. Yours may be different.

And as for ‘browse’. When you want to make a change in your life that is significantly different to your current, your mind will activate an alarm bell. Something inside you will say hey this is dangerous, I need to protect you by invoking a sense of fear in you. I need to stop you.

So say your purpose is to be more creative. If you have let this desire sit long enough without taking any action towards it, you have no doubt accumulated some extra baggage to it. Let’s just say you feel like there’s a lot riding on it, to say the least. And in your mind, you endeavour to use art magazines to solve this issue. You tell yourself this is it. I am going to read this magazine from front to back, meticulously, and make sure that by the time I am done with it I have come up with my best work to date and this one is going to be really creative and ingenious. Just a little riding on it, right? I know, tell me about it. So your mind will freak out in all kinds of ways. You will feel physically nervous. Your inner critic will kick in and suddenly this doesn’t feel like a task you a looking forward to anymore.

So here ‘browse’ is meant to be your saviour. An action with the baggage removed. Simply ‘browse’ – taking it for it literally means. Non-committal. Free. Easy-going. You may come across something you like, you may not. Something may inspire you, encourage you, or it may not.

Let ‘browse’ be your small stepping stone. Small enough that your mind does not go into protection mode, but valuable nonetheless. Then do this browse often. Often enough that you teach your mind that this action is not as dangerous as it initially thought. Then turn this browse into one with more intent, find that artwork that is going to inspire you to be more creative, find that idea that will allow you to bring enjoyment into your life, reach that moment of gratification as you reflect on your actions.

What magazine will you browse? What’s your ‘art’? That domain that ignites your creativity?
